Geotag Photos for Android – beta version

September 22nd, 2010

Well, not everybody has to have iPhone, I guess… So that we decided to port Geotag Photos to Android platform. Android is amazing – yes, it is not so easy to make nice GUI with animations for Android, but from the other way, there is much less issues for example with background tasks (that Geotag Photos is using).

Currently, beta version of Geotag Photos for Android is finished. We tried to implement all functions, that are in iPhone version, we also tried to make easy to use GUI, that you know from iPhone version. Android users will receive same features, like automatic / manual logging, map view, GPX export and integration with our desktop geotagging solution (means geotagging of almost all image files – JPG and more that 20 types of RAWs – NEF, CR2, CRW, …).

It will take some time, before we will release this application on Android Market, but now we want to provide this version to 20-30 beta testers. If you have Android phone, please feel free to signup to Geotag Photos Android beta program (we already have enough beta testers, thank you!).

New version of Geotag Photos desktop application – altitude support & more

September 8th, 2010

We just released new version of Geotag Photos geotagging desktop application. This version was focused mostly on bug fixes, but some new interesting features are there:

  • since iPhone Geotag Photos 2.5 we are storing altitude with each shot. But until now, this information wasn’t added to your photos. Now, altitude is automatically stored to photo Exif information, so that now everybody will know, how hight was that mountain on that beautiful photo, that you’ve climbed :-)
  • Exiftool plugin is now prefered geotagging engine. If you are using default geotagging engine (that supports .JPGs only), you will see one time message after next run of Geotag Photos desktop application, that will recommend you to install exiftool plugin. Sure it is free. We decide to do this, because Exiftool supports more cameras and also writes GPS coordinates to images better.
  • Improved camera RAW support. Now supports more cameras.

So that happy geotagging!

New feature on the web: Your Trips!

August 27th, 2010

We have good day today. Our geotagging app Geotag Photos 2.5 was approved and that’s not all, what we wanted to announce today!

Have you wonder, why is list of trips with GPX export on Geotagphotos.net so ugly? So we did. And we decided to change it. And as the result is completely new functionality of Geotag Photos web, that will really enhance your possibilities of trips management.

I think, that video is better than 1000 words :-) . So that look on it & then login to your Geotagphotos.net with your account, this functionality is enabled for all users now.

If you want to read, what is new, here is it:

  • new cool table with all of your trips. Easy to search for any trip and easy to go thought long list of trips
  • click on trip name and you can look on your trip on the map!
  • somebody of us wanted to delete the trips – now this function is here
  • GPX export was improved as well – now if you export only one trip, the filename will be same, as the name of the trip (and not that ugly name gpxexport.gpx as before)

Maybe you will also notice other small improvements of web, you can find direct links to the user guide and blog on the top of each page and we also fixed bug, that avoid to execute login for just by pressing “Enter” key (this problem was in latest Google Chrome and Internet Explorer).

So that have a nice weekend and don’t forgot to give us feedback! As usually, we will implement most of feature requests, that you write to us.

Yours,

Jindrich & Jan Sarson

Geotag Photos 2.5 for iPhone – available on AppStore now

August 27th, 2010

Actually, it took shorter time, than we expected. Reason for this was bug in version 2.11, that made Geotag Photos less accurate, that we (and you) expected (in fact, there were used some debug settings by mistake). We kindly asked Apple for expedited review and result from this is new version of our iPhone geotagging solution available today.

We already wrote about new features  in this article. But we added few more things during  beta testing period:

  • possibility to switch map view to satellite or hybrid view
  • support for hi-res Retina display on iPhone 4
  • support for altitude information in GPX export

Maybe you will also note of app name change – because we have lite version, we decided to change of full version to “Geotag Photos Pro”. We spent almost 2 months with preparing of this version and we hope, that you will enjoy it. Lite version of Geotag Photos 2.5 will be available within a week.

But this is not latest news today :-) . Yes, we have another surprise for you today, but give us few more hours, until we release it. We will write about it on this blog for sure.

Yours,

Jindrich and Jan, authors of Geotag Photos

Geotag Photos 2.5 – finally submitted to AppStore

August 25th, 2010

It took longer, that we expected – but finally, we sent new version of Geotag Photos to AppStore. Maybe you wonder, why it took so long, when we have almost finished version 3 weeks ago? The reason for this is, that we decided to release beta version to allow test Geotag Photos more that 30 users and hear their feedback, before we release it to public.

We think, that it was worth of it. We got beta testers, that tested Geotag Photos in really remote areas (like Sumatra in Indonesia or Myanmar) and we were able to improve our code to work best even in those situations. We also added few more features – like possibility to switch map type in map view screen.

We hope, that from this delay will benefit you – users. So what is new and noteworthy in Geotag Photos 2.5:

  • GPX export through iTunes or Email – no need to upload your data, if you don’t want to use our geotagging desktop application
  • Trip operations screen with possibility to rename / delete whole trip and export it as well
  • Improved Map View screen with nicer track view and possibility to switch between normal / satellite and hybrid view of map
  • Improved GPS core – more accurate and more energy saving in some situations
  • Improved timezone support - now we display all trips with local time + timezone offset, if it is different from current timezone
  • plenty of small bugfixes and tiny feature improvements, that should make your life with Geotag Photos better :-)

So that thanks to all beta testers – you provided us really valuable feedback. And keep your fingers crossed to be Geotag Photos 2.5 approved quickly (now is unfortunately waiting period longer that a week :-( ).

Jindrich & Jan, authors of Geotag Photos

New Geotag Photos iPhone application – preview of version 2.5

July 29th, 2010

As we already noticed earlier this month, we are working on new version of geotagging iPhone application - Geotag Photos 2.5. Currently, all features are implemented and we are in heavy testing phase. It will take at least 2 weeks, until new Geotag Photos will be in AppStore, but I think, that this waiting is worth of it :-) . So that let’s look on new features.

GPX export without uploading to our servers

This was one of the most requested features. Some of you want to do geotagging of photos in your own software (like Aperture) and don’t want to use our Geotag Photos desktop application. For that reason, we’ve implemented GPX export 2 months ago, and it is available now thought Geotag Photos web site. But it is still needed to upload data to our server and some of you concerns about privacy – that we are storing your location data on our server. Even when we don’t collect any personal data and use strong secure protocols to make all data really secure, we listen to our customers and we prepared 2 other ways how to export GPX – without sending data to our server.

First way is totally automatic and very easy to use. You even don’t need network for it. It is using new feature of iPhone OS 4 (so that you will need iOS 4 to use it) – that is called iTunes File Sharing. Only thing, that you have to do is to connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, click on your iPhone item there and open Application tab. When you scroll down, you will see File sharing section with list of applications, that supports file sharing. Select Geotag Photos and now the magic is here – all your trips are there – in GPX format. Just select GPX file and click on Save to to get it where you want. As we wrote, this works automatically (maybe we could say automagically), no need to select any export or so… When you update to new Geotag Photos, your GPX files for all trips will be there.

Another possibility is to send GPX file by Email. My favorite usage for this feature is to send recorded track with locations to my friends, that were on the trip with me – they can use it to geotag their photos. This function is available from new Trip Action menu.

Trip Action menu

Together with export function, you asked for better management of trips on the iPhone. In current version, it is possible to delete parts of trips, but what if you want to delete whole trip or edit the trip name? It is where Trip action menu will help you. On every trip in trip log is now blue arrow button, that shows that Trips Action screen.

New GPS Data logger backed

Last, but not least. This is invisible change on first look, but everybody will benefit from it. We’ve totally reimplemented backend of Geotag Photos, so that now Geotag Photos is less iPhone battery consuming, is more configurable and so on. Also that ugly thing, that logging was working only when you were on main screen is gone. Now, when you start logging, it will continue with it even when you switch to the Map view or to the Trip log view.

We’ve also extended configuration of Geotag Photos, now you can setup minimum accuracy, that is acceptable for you. In current version, it is 200 m, but in this new version, you can change it. Using this option and setting low enough accuracy, Geotag Photos can work even on 1st generation of iPhone (without GPS) – location will be determined using Wifi and GSM cell towers – with accuracy few hundred meters or so.

Hope, you will like our new version. Please give us few days for final testing, then we will send it to AppStore as the update for you. And yes, don’t forgot to send us new ideas. We will implement them in next version, similarly, like we’ve implemented those features.

Geotag Photos gets User Guide and new version of Desktop application

July 20th, 2010

Last week made us pretty bussy and we are happy to announce 2 important things today. First – Geotag Photos gets its User Guide. We are always focusing on simplicity and easy to use, but we thought, that it would be nice to have all information about Geotag Photos features in one document. So that you can download Geotag Photos User Guide, currently in English version only, but we are planning to translate it to all supported languages in the future. User guide describes both iPhone and desktop application, so that after the reading of it, you should be master of Geotag Photos! Please feel free to send us your comments to user guide, we will update this document by your comments.

Second important news is about our geotagging desktop application. We released beta version of it last week and after the week of testing and getting feedback from you, we decided to release it as the final version today. So that, all of you can use those new exiting features:

  • desktop integration – no more need to run Geotag Photos desktop application from our website – it can be added to Applications / Start menu. Just allow desktop application on first run, or use Setup function of Geotag Photos – just click on System integration
  • support for fixing of time issues – if you didn’t have same time on both you iPhone and camera, you can now enable Fix camera time function in Setup dialog. Then simply click on Edit button near fix camera time text on status bar to adjust diference between camera and iPhone time

We are also working on new version of iPhone part of our geotagging application, so that stay tuned! Jan (one of authors of Geotag Photos) is also on trip in Asia, so that we will post his experience with Geotag Photos on this blog soon. You can look forward for his geotagged photos from Dubai, Thailand and Burma (Myanmar).

New beta version of Geotag Photos desktop application

July 9th, 2010

As we wrote about week ago, we are continuing with improving of Geotag Photos. In this blog spot, I want to introduce new version of Geotag Photos desktop application with features, that you asked for. And what is best – you can start using this version now – even if is beta, it is pretty stable. But first – what we prepared for you?

Integration of Geotag Photos with your operating system

This was one of the most requested feature – yes, we agree, that it can be boring to login to our website whenever you want to run Geotag Photos desktop application. So that – it is over now. You can still use that old method, but with this new beta, you can also simply add Geotag Photos to Application folder (on Mac OS X), Start menu (on Microsoft Windows) or to desktop (on Linux).

How is it working? First time when you start Geotag Photos application, you will be asked, if you want to integrate Geotag Photos with your operating system. You can do the same task using the Configuration dialog after you start of Geotag Photos. And – that’s all. No more of running from web, just run Geotag Photos from your desktop, as any other application.

You can even use “remember password” and “autologin” function, so that no more boring logins…

Not to be lost when the time is not correct

It hapened even to us – camera time and iPhone time was not synchronized properly. Yes, we are writing this everywhere, as the rule number ONE – you have to have same time on iPhone and your camera to make geotagging with Geotag Photos working. But – this advice will not help you, if you realize time mismatch after the trip with hundreds of photos taken. It can also happen very easily, when you travel to different timezone – iPhone change time automatically, but not the camera.

So that we decided to implement “fix time” function into Geotag Photos. This function is disabled by default (we want to leave user interface as simple, as possible), but you can enable it in Configuration dialog:

Then you will see actual delta time in Geotag Photos status bar and you can change it. After this time change, your photos will be reloaded and you will see new results in few seconds.

As we noticed earlier in this post, we released this version of Geogag Photos as the public beta. Fell free to try it, send us your comments (you can use “Chat with us” / “Contact us” button to send bugreport / feature request). If you want to use this beta version, click on Run beta version link instead of the big blue button “Run the application”. New features about iPhone geotagging application will follow on this blog next week :-) .

That’s all for now, have a nice weekend and happy geotagging!
