iPhone cannot check GPS location when I am abroad with data roaming off?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

We’ve got complain from one customer of our geotagging solution Geotag Photos for iPhone. He was using our iPhone application abroad with roaming data off – and he was unable to get GPS location using Geotag Photos. We got also one similar negative review from another customer (we were sorry, that he didn’t wrote to us – it is always better to send us email, because we are reading emails every day and we can reply to email – not to reviews in AppStore) with similar problem.

But – I personally tested Geotag Photos on my vacation in Germany and France 2 weeks ago – sure I had roaming data off (what the hell is pricing data roaming in Europe?) and it worked perfectly. I guessed, that our customers are not the only ones, that have similar problems and I was right. Fortunately, there is solution for this.

It is necessary to understand, how GPS in iPhone is working. GPS chip is always counting with latest known location – it can predict from it, where to find satellites, so that it is relatively easy/fast to get current position. With iPhone, even when you move significantly (like 1000′s of miles), so called Assisted GPS can speed up to get current position as well – it is using network database and can get satellite positions though network. But in one case has GPS chip really hard work – when you move for half of Earth and have data roaming off (of course, our dear mobile operators). Then it can take 5-15 minutes to get first position.

Best way, how to do this is to start iPhone Maps application and even when you don’t have data, so that map will not be loaded, you can check for current position. Be in open area with good visibility to sky and please wait to get accurate enough position. You have to do this only once. Then clever iPhone will remember, that you’ve moved from Asia to Europe or vice-versa and in the next time, when you will want to use location services, it will take usual time (usually up to minute).

Plans for Geotag Photos 2.2 release

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Geotag Photos 2.1 for iPhone with multitasking support is behind us and now is time to think on new version. Thanks to all customers, that sends us feedback and request for new features. No feature request disappear, we are putting all of them to TODO list and implementing them according of number of request to each feature. Now version 2.1 is in development and we are planning to release it probably in July (depending on Apple approval process, as usually).

Do you wonder, what will be in Geotag Photos 2.2? We are planning this:

  • some of you wants to use GPX export without uploading data to our server. Although we think, that it is easiest way, how to get GPX data, in Geotag Photos 2.2 will be possible to export using iTunes file sharing function
  • we want to also improve Map view of Geotag Photos – currently, Map view displays historical data, but we want to make it live, so that new position will be displayed on map immediately
  • some of you wants to run our desktop geotagging application through Start menu on Windows or through Dock on Mac OS X. So that we are working on modified version of Geotag Photos desktop application, that will work more as a standard desktop application. Sure original way, how to start it (through web) will be available as well.
  • We are also implementing timezone support – so that if you forgot to change time on your camera / iPhone, you will be able to select timezone offset and your photos will be geotaged without problems (now, when you forgot to change time on your camera when timezone is changed, just write us email, we can help you even now :-) ).

And sure there will be bugfixes, other small changes, we want to also focus on even better battery life… So that interesting month is behind us.

New version of Geotag Photos 2.1 for iPhone still in Apple review…

Monday, June 21st, 2010

As we wrote one week ago, we finished and released new version of Geotag Photos, that supports iPhone OS 4 and multitasking. But unfortunately, the Apple review process is taking longer than usually and this new version is not available yet.

New iPhone OS uses new way, how to handle applications, that runs in sleep mode or in the background. It has big impact on Geotag Photos application – and current version of Geotag Photos (2.0) doesn’t work properly on iPhone OS 4 on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. From the other way – it works perfectly on iPhone 3G.

So that if you want to use Geotag Photos before new version will be available (our estimation is – 1-3 days), please don’t upgrade to iPhone OS 4 yet. We will send new information to this blog, whenever we will get new information from Apple regarding our update. We want to be open to you, our customers.

Thank you!

Geotag Photos for iPhone supports multitasking!

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Yes, it is true. As you maybe know, new iPhone firmware 4.0 will support multitasking (on iPhone 3GS and new iPhone 4). It is not “plug and play” however, we had to made some changes into application to support this, so that you will have to upgrade to new version to use this functionality. Today, we’ve finally finished testing and uploaded new version of our geotagging solution Geotag Photos and free Geotag Photos Lite to AppStore. It will take few days to approve, but keep you fingers crossed to be available on 21st of June – day, when everybody will be able to upgrade iPhone to iPhone OS 4.

So that how it will work? Simply. You will just start logging as usually, but instead of to be forced to leave application running on foreground, you will be able to click on Home button of your iPhone and do anything else (like perform call, start another application or so). Geotag Photos will still run and log new positions. When you will want to stop logging, you just simply open Geotag Photos again and stop logging using stop button.

As a result of using new multitasking code, there is one big advantage – it consumes less battery. Yes, according to our testing, now you can logging for more than 50% of time, that you was albe using non-multitasking version. So that again, keep your fingers crossed and with a bit of luck, you will be able to download new version in day #1.

And what about users, that don’t want to upgrade to iPhone OS 4 or that are using oder iPhone 3G, that doesn’t support multitasking? No problem – even our new versions of Geotag Photos will work on iPhone firmware 3.1 and above.

And as always, please send us your feedback. We want to be best geotagging software for iPhone :-)

New version of Geotag Photos and free Lite version

Friday, June 4th, 2010

We are proud to announce new version of Geotag Photos for iPhone. Changes are not mostly visible for users, but we improved GPS grabbing part of application and we also improved map view of current trip. Based on your feedback, we made functionality to display whole trip on map, not only selected part. You can switch view from current part / to whole trip using button in map view.

Another new version will be released just after new iPhone firmware 4.0 will be released by Apple. We already have working version on iPhone Beta 4 firmware, which using multitasking feature of iPhone OS 4.0. Yes, with iPhone OS 4.0 you will be able to run Geotag Photos on background, so that you positions will be logged even when another application will run. We will post demo how it is working soon.

And latest news is for customers, that didn’t buy Geotag Photos yet. We released free version of our Geotagging solution - Lite version of Geotag Photos. Lite version allows only manual position logging (that means, you have to press button, if you want to log position), but all other features are there, including GPX export, RAW images format geotagging support etc. And you can even try automatic logging – you can enable it 3 times for 8 hours in Lite version. So – don’t wait and download Geotag Photos Lite, if you want to try!

And as always, let us know, if you have any comments to our application, we will implement changes to new version of our geotagging solution based on your comments.
