New version of Geotag Photos desktop application

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Thank you for your feedback, that you gave us during latest 2 weeks. Based on them, we prepared new version of Geotag Photos desktop application. There is plenty of new features, I’d like to introduce some of them.

  • New GUI design - maybe you don’t care about graphics, but we tried to make our application more easy to use. We added new quick open dialog with recent open folders and also toolbar with access to all important functions.
  • New open folder dialog on Mac OS X - for me very important feature – open folder dialog was really bad – non standard. We don’t know, why Java on Mac OS X uses this dummy Open dialog, but we’ve hacked Java little bit and now you can use standard Mac OS X Open folder dialog, using left sidebar with favorite places or so.
  • RAW files formats support - we wrote about this in post Geotagging of RAW files, so that now we released official version of RAW support in Geotag Photos application. We are supporting for more than 20 of different RAW formats, including most used NEF, CRW, CR2 and others. Complete pictures format list, for that we support geotagging: jpg, nef, cr2, crw, dcr, ciff, erf, orf, k25, kdc, mef, mrw, nrw, pef, raf, tif, tiff, raw, arw, rw2, srf, sr2, srw, x3f, dng

So that enjoy this new version and give us your feedback! We are also improving iPhone application, we will write about some of new features in other post.

Geotagging of RAW files (NEF, CR2 and others) – beta version

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

After  2 weeks of hard work Jan finished new version of Geotag Photos desktop application. I will write separate article about this version soon, but today I want to introduce new and most wanted feature – camera’s RAW format support. Yes, we got a lot of feedback about our Geotagging application and one of biggest disadvantage for professional photographers was lack of RAW format support. So it is history now.

Today we’ve released beta version of new Geogag Photos desktop application, that supports majority of RAW formats. Doesn’t matter if you are using Nikon camera (with NEF format), Canon (with CR2 format), Sony (SR2 or ARW format) or any other. We prepared plugin, that integrates well known and great ExifTool with Geotag Photos app. We also focused on easy installation of this plugin – just click on Setup icon in Geotag Photos desktop application and follow the instructions. After that, you should enable RAW format in Setup window and that’s all. You can start geotagging of your photos in RAW format. And as with previous version, our application is working in Mac OS X, Windows and even in Linux.

Please note – we’ve released this version as a public beta. So that – even we’ve tested it, it is still piece of hot cake. Final version (with translations to other than English languages and some other improvements) will be released next week.

If you want to try, login to Geotag Photos web site and select Start beta version of Geotag application link. And don’t forgot – we warned you, that this is beta version… Let us know to our email info@isarson.com, if you find any issues.

And here you can see video how it is working:

Bug in Aperture application – wrong interpretation of GPS coordinates

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

We got some bug-reports for our iPhone geotagging application from users in Australia, that pictures geotagged by our application are placed in wrong place, thousand of miles away from correct place. As an example, we got an photo from one user, that was taken in Melbourne, Australia, but placed in Apple Aperture application somewhere in North Pacific Ocean near Japan coast. Well, this didn’t make us happy…

So that we’ve looked to our code, tried to import that photo to various applications – it worked correctly in Google Picasa, Apple iPhoto… Only Apple Aperture placed it again and again to North Pacific Ocean. It would be too easy to say: “bug in Aperture”, isn’t it? But we didn’t want to believe this.

So that if looking to our code and testing didn’t bring us any results, our friend “Google” showed us interesting thread on official Aperture discussion forum. And it seems, that this is really Aperture bug. You can look at this thread and read it yourself: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2348910, similar experience is also described there: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11092952.

So that – is Geotag Photos unusable for Aperture users now? Not really. You can use GPX export and then import GPX file into Aperture (using GPS -> Import track). It should work correctly. But don’t forgot to check timezone of your camera and iPhone – it has to be same. As our Geotag Photos desktop app can work without setting of correct timezone, for GPX export it has to be setup properly.

We also send bug report to Apple and we are looking for another workaround. Stay tuned!

Update: newest version of GeotagPhotos desktop application can fix this bug! Just install ExifTool plugin (use Setup button) and select RAW+JPG geotagging engine. Then, Aperture will load geotagged photos correctly.

GPX export function just released!

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

As we wrote one week ago, we decided to develop GPX export function for our geotagging application. Some of you asked for this, and why not to do it, when you want it? So, after few days of beta testing, it is now enabled for all customers. How to get this function? First, you have to upload logged data from your iPhone as usually. Then just login to your geotagphotos.net account and you will see new tab there – GPX Export. After clicking on this, you will be able to select trips, that you want to export and after clicking on Export button – your GPX file is generated for you.

If you are not familiar with GPX – few word about GPX format. GPX format was developed as a standard file format for location data exchange. Most of current hardware GPS devices are supporting this. Because it is standard format, you can use it with various applications. For example – some photo editing tools support this. You can use “Import GPX” function in Apperture, that will Geotag you photos that you have in your Apperture library. There also web based tools, that will analyze your trip (for example, that will show you, how many miles / kilometres you did, how fast you were etc.) or you can display your track on map (you can use GPSVisualizer.com tool for this).

If you have your popular way of use GPX format, feel free to share with us in comments! Also feel free to let us know, what other functions you want to have in Geotag Photos.
